How to Prepare for a Brand Photography Session

A brand photography session is an investment. To get the most out of it, the work starts before you arrive on set. Here's what we recommend to every client we work with before a shoot.
1. Know What You're Trying to Say
Before thinking about outfits or locations, get clear on the message. What do you want someone to feel when they see your brand imagery? Established and trustworthy? Bold and unconventional? Warm and approachable? The answer to that question drives every creative decision — lighting, colour palette, composition, expression.
2. Build a Reference Library
Collect images — from Instagram, Pinterest, campaigns you admire, photographers whose style you're drawn to. Don't worry about whether they're from your industry. The point is to communicate a visual feeling. A well-curated mood board saves significant time on set and helps your photographer match the aesthetic you have in your head.
3. Think About Where You'll Use the Images
Website hero images need space for text overlay. LinkedIn profile photos need to work as a small circle. Instagram content has its own dimensions and scroll context. Knowing where the images will live helps determine framing, orientation (landscape vs portrait), and how much breathing room to leave in the composition.
4. Prepare Your Wardrobe With Intent
Colours matter. Avoid heavy patterns that compete with the scene. Wear what aligns with your brand palette, not just what you like in person. Bring 2-3 outfit options so you have variety across the gallery without losing visual consistency.
5. Brief Your Photographer Properly
The more context your photographer has, the better the result. Share your brand guidelines if you have them, your target audience, and any non-negotiables for the day. At Mush Visuals, we include a pre-shoot consultation in every booking — this is where that clarity gets established before anyone picks up a camera.
